Camping in Kenya is incredible. It also requires respect for the environment. Here's what's in my kit and my head.
The Medical Kit
Adventure Medical Kits Mountain Series
Perfect base kit. I add:
- Extra oral rehydration salts (essential for any stomach issues)
- Malaria rapid test kits (peace of mind)
- Broad-spectrum antibiotic (Ciprofloxacin - consult your doctor)
SAM Splint
Rolls up, molds to any limb. Worthless until you need it, then priceless.
Tourniquet
For severe bleeding only. Know how to use it before you need it.

Wildlife Safety
- Never cook in or near your tent. Food smells attract animals.
- Store all food in the vehicle or bear-proof container (even if no bears, baboons are worse).
- Make noise while hiking. Surprising a buffalo is bad.
Communication
Garmin inReach Mini 2
Satellite communicator. Send messages, trigger SOS, share location with family.
Local SIM with Safaricom
For camps with signal. Use my eSIM guide to set up before arriving.
Emergency Numbers Saved in Phone
- 112 or 999 (Kenya emergency)
- Local police station nearest campsite
- Amref Flying Doctors (air evacuation) - +254 20 699 3999
Final word: Camp with a buddy when possible. Tell someone your exact route. Check in daily.
